Bokeh and a Question

I’m really into photography. And I am crazy about bokeh. I purchased a Nikon D60 a few months ago but haven’t got a chance to use it like I would like. I have been eyeballing the 50mm f/1.8 lens from Nikon. It’s a great prime lense and does fantastic bokeh. Apparently the lense that comes with the camera doesn’t produce the bokeh I am looking for because of the lack of a low “1.8″ f-stop.  The lower the f-stop the better the bokeh (well not really since this isn’t the only factor…but i shan’t bore you).

In case you don’t know what bokeh it’s “The pleasing quality of the out of focus areas of an image, produced by the lens. Derived from the Japanese word for fool”

And just in case you didn’t know this is bokeh

This is bokeh

This is bokeh

I love bokeh.

Get it?

Should I buy the lense?

  • i have that same camera and wanted that same lens too because i'm a bokeh whore as well...turns out they don't make that lens for our camera. we can only get the 1.4 50mm and it has to be the 1.4G or else it won't fit. and it costs 450 bucks. GASP. i wish i would have known when i got my camera that a lot of lenses aren't compatible with it. SUCKS.

  • Actually the lens does fit. But it doesn't autofocus like the kit lenses do, so you have to focus it manually. I weighed the pros and cons of this and determined that a $300 difference wasn't worth the autofocus. Plus I will be able to better my skills on manual focusing (as I have none of those skills whatsoever).

That being said, I have purchased the lens, but it is not in my possession, I had my dad test it out (i'm away from home) and he said it fit just fine, but he couldn't figure out how to focus it right. I guess I will be left to figure that out for myself when I get home.

I can't wait to meet my baby!!
  • I actually have this lens and even though I haven't used it very much (been busy), I do like the results I've had so far from it. Totally recommended.

  • Those photos are cool, I like photography but I know nothing about it and have no money for a good camera :( One of my friends is really good at it though and I always enjoy seeing what pictures people take.

  • These are some incredible photos. You have me convinced that I am going to purchase this lens along with my new slr.
  • I have a friend who took a photography class a few months ago, and now it seems I know the word to describe what she's great at - bokeh shots :) Thanks for sharing. Yes, if you like photography then u should buy the lense coz it offers you some variety in ur picture taking. I have to say these pics are just beautiful. I hope to buy one soon too....so many things to buy....
  • "should i buy the bokeh?" now that is the question!
and i think you already do know the answer to that.

great photos. i am dying to do photography myself but i don't have the toys. yet.
  • Wow.. That lens is amazing.. I vote yes to buying it! :)
  • I think your pictures are beautiful the way they are. However I see what you mean about the bokeh. The lens will only make them more beautiful. I would buy it.
  • I want to thank you for telling me what bokeh is and if this lens does this, you definitely need to purchase it. I used to be into photography when I was in the Air Force but somehow it has alluded me. Looking at your work may inspire me to pick it back up. Thanks!

  • Beautiful photos. If you have a passion for photography than it definitely is worth the investment. I regret buying the camera I did but can't change it because we just bought it. If you can, I say go for it.
  • Bokeh is cool. If I were you I would buy the lense
