I look too young

I admit I am a hard stick when it comes to getting my blood drawn.  So when I was poked on yesterday for over an hour to get four vials of blood, I wasn’t surprised. What I was surprised with was the reactions from the technicians.

They told me I was “handled it better than most adults” and how I was such a “brave little girl”.

Umm?? Hello??? I am not a “little girl” I am a 20-something year old adult!!

I’ve been dealing with this problem for too many years now. No matter what I do, I look like I’m between the ages of 12-14. Makeup does not work.  Dressing up might as well be a joke.  I feel like I’m aging in reverse, especially after my teenage-hormone-induced acne has cleared up.

My first day on my job the security guard jokingly said that I looked “far too young to be working here”.  Mind you I was wearing a business suit,  makeup, and high heels.

When I came to college and arrived in my dorm room my roommate and her friend just stared at me. I had absolutely no idea why . Then it struck me, “how old are you??” She asked.  And when I told her, she let out a huge sigh of relief.  “Oh, because I thought you were 14 at most!”

Gee, thanks.

Some people pay tons to look young.  But I wish I looked older than half my age.  The only thing I am happy about is the fact that I am not flat chested because then I would have some SERIOUS problems.  It’s a big deal. I’d swear it holds me back in the world of work (but i don’t swear, remember?) and the way people treat and perceive me.

How old do I look like to you?? (I am about 5′ in height).

I get you 100% A lot of people tell you that it's a compliment to be treated this way but it's very painful. Even minor things become a pain in the a**. I'm 25 but I am told I look like I'm twelve. I can't even pay with a credit card without people automatically assuming I'm using my mom's card and refuse to help me before even asking for my ID. I've gone to bars and been refused in because they think my ID is fake. I went to Vegas but it sucked because I was harassed by security every 2 seconds. I was carded 3 times within a 5 minute time frame. When I go out to dinner with friends the waiters won’t even look at me while addressing the table. Even when I ask questions they’ll turn to the person across from me and answer the question to them instead.
People treat me like I'm a kid wherever I go and I'm not respected at work, despite the fact that I graduated with a 4.0 GPA with 2 majors and a minor while working full time throughout college. I can tell when new people are hired and they are introduced to me they sort of pause in astonishment and don't even go to shake my hand. I think it holds me back a lot. The most annoying thing is when people assume that I am this cute, adorable little porcelain doll that doesn’t like to have a good time. I love to go fishing and hiking and hang with the guys but I’m typically hit on my men who think I like to paint my toenails pink every night.

However, I've grown to accept that I'll always look cute and adorable : ) I get away with a lot more than most people my age. I've gotten really good at the "innocent" act and guys eat that stuff up. Gosh they are stupid.
The good news is that while most people are judgmental and ignorant, not everyone is. I'm madly attracted to older men and luckily for us a lot of them are sick of dealing with whiny old hags. Stay a kid at heart and you'll always have men running after you ; ) A lot of friends will say ‘I don’t understand how you can have so many guys running after you when you look so young and I can’t even get a date.” My answer to them…”I’m not a bitch like you.” ; ) Even when I’m a complete b*** people think it’s cute. Enjoy it.

Yep I know what you talking about. I didn't get to date a girl till I was 17 because no one wanted to date the 12 year old that was actually 16 years old.

I was IDed at the liquor store till the age of 30. And just recently when I did get a date she is 19 years old and the generational gap was way to big. I'm 40 but look 24. It makes many things difficult.

    *17 years old (not 16)

I'm 39, but look around 24. Everybody is like "your so lucky", but it causes problems. It is hard to find someone to date because guys my age look like my dad or uncle and younger guys dont work out cause I'm just to mature for them.

I know how it feels I am like that as well. I am older than you but I look like 11-15. Everytime I go clubbin with friends they have to check my id like twice. There was this time when I went in and this other guy pulled me back and was like sorry gotta check again you look way too young girl.

you look late teens early twenties to me. I also have same problem and I also think it holds me back in the world of work! Age discrimination and being treated like a child! It is even worse now because of the economy and I can't find a freakin job!!!!

You do look young. I have had the same problem. I am 30 and can pass for 22 or younger depending on how I dress. It can be very frustrating. I have a 12 year old son and I am mistaken for being his older sister all the time. I Know how old I am and the years of my life I've experienced. It really used to get to me and I would walk around angry at comments people would make. I don't care what people think now. People judge everyone based on first impressions. That is human nature. YOU are are beautiful person in a small package. Smile and say thank you next time someone says you look young. People who don't have this problem don't even know they are offending anyone. Even though it is the same as saying to someone's face "hey did you know you are really over-weight?" Focus on you and your goals in life.

Hello..I know what you mean..I was in college then and I was with my cousin who was then a 6th grader. The woman we met thought I WAS THE 6TH GRADER! I will never forget her facial expression!
  • Yeah, you look 12, but if 12-14 is half your age you will appreciate this soon! Appreciation really is just around the corner :D At 28, I can see my age creeping up on me. See, what will happen is one day you'll look in the mirror or see a picture of yourself and think, "what!? when did this happen!?"
  • You really look young. But in my opinion, I'd take it as a compliment. Because a lot of people are trying so hard to hide their age and are dying to get a compliment like such from others.

On the flipside, it doesn't matter if you look young or old as long as we are acting our age then the respect from other people will always be there. :)

  • You do look really young, but that should be a compliment! My guess for your age looking at the photo would be about 18. I'd rather look younger than older any day. Enjoy, as this is a sign that you ages well, always remember that it could be worse, as in looking three times older than your normal age!

  • You do look young... if I didn't know your age, I would say you're around 16. Just try and take it as a compliment. I'm 38 and I so wanna look like I was 16 again! :)

  • This blog made me chuckle! I get the same thing so often: most people think I'm still in my teens. I probably don't have it quite as bad because I am four inches taller than you. :) But yes, I remember the day I turned 22, I went out to eat for my birthday. The lady heard it was my birthday and said, "Oh, are you excited to get your driver's license soon?!" Oh dear.
That said, I think you look about 18 from this picture or so.
Don't you love how often everyone tells you that you'll appreciate it when your older? I get that all the time!
    I'm almost 24 now. It's moved up some...now most people think I'm 18. :)

  • LOL. The drivers license thing is pretty funny. Yea the "you'll appreciate it when you're older" gets old fast!! I appreciae looking younger just not this much younger!
  • Hey there. thanks for the post! You do look on the young side but I know I've had some one mistake me for a high schooler and a friend of me wished me a happy 29th birthday on my recent 24th birthday, so anyway, I think 20 somethings are hard to pin down. You'll be happy when you're 50 anyway ;)

  • Someday you may be happy to look so young, but I sympathize with your frustration. My niece is 19, a college sophomore, but since she's less than five feet tall, she gets offered children's menus and unaccompanied minor privileges. Meanwhile, she's so freakishly intelligent that sometimes I can't even figure out her writing, but it's hard to get strangers to take her seriously.

By the way, thanks for visiting and commenting on my daughter's blog (Cupcake).

You definitely look younger than you are. You look about 15 I would say. I think you should take the fact that you look young as a positive. I hope you continue to look younger than your age all your life!

  • Okay, I’m really bad at guessing peoples ages but based on the pic you’ve posted you look like you’re between 16-18. Don’t get mad! :D

  • Honestly, I think a lot of age perception depends on a person's demeanor and body language. Some people focus more on faces, whereas others take in the whole package. While your face does look young (and I still occasionally get carded for R-rated movies) it will just benefit you that much more as you get older. BTW, I started medical school before I could legally drink, but when I started seeing patients, I rarely got questioned about my age. Be confident in your own abilities and let everyone else guess how you managed to get so far at such a young age.

I agree with everyone else. Looking younger than your real age is something you will definitely appreciate later in life. I'd say you do look 16 and that's a compliment! Sometimes, because of my petite stature, I have a tendency to look younger than my age too.

By the way, I'm a hard stick too. The most I had was 8 times at a time. It's awful but now I've learned to call the IV Team and remind them to bring the ultrasound -that's how hard a stick I am!

  • Hey Tellie,
It doesn't matter what other people think about you. What matters is how you feel about yourself. One day you will be very thankful that you look as young as you do. If the truth was known, the other girls are very jealous. Our daughter had the same problem for years but she overcame it. She still doesn't look 32 but who cares. She has a family and is doing very well despite what others think. I think you are handling it very well and your talents more than make up for the way you look. I like the picture but I think it would have been much nicer to see a big pearly white smile on your face. Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving such nice comments. Have a great week!

    I'd say you're 16 at most.
However you should appreciate that, and hope it'll last :-D.
Let me quote something from the net about beauty: Research on facial attractiveness has pointed out that the presence of childlike facial features increases attractiveness.

So be a proud child woman.

    ;)
