Decision Time!

Okay I need some real, practical help.

So, finally after going through all this sticky red tape, I am a licensed driver again.  When I moved from overseas, my license didn’t transfer over. Boo-hiss. I was told I had to get a learner’s permit and wait 9 months before I could take the drivers test.  So I got a learners permit.  In the meantime my parents thought it was a good idea to buy me a Toyota Corrola. I love it!

But then things happened. My eyes went out of whack and I couldn’t drive for a while.  I learned that I have a degenerative eye condition that I will probably need surgery on in the future, and I really wasn’t comfortable driving while going blind.

So…a grand total of 2 years later after countless visits to doctors and eye specialists, my eye sight is under control and I have gotten the OK to take the drivers test. I took it and I passed with flying colors.  Later on my dad called to put me on the insurance and it cost a whooping $300 for 6 months.  So. I have  a problem. How do I obtain this $300?  tHE $300 is only for a few months. Getting a job is almost close to impossible right now…I’m thinking of selling the car and going cheaper. Should I?

  • Congratulations on passing and getting your driver's license!!! Can't give an advice since i don't own a car and i don't even know how to drive other than a motorbike or a bicycle heehee. BUt i hope you get to fix everything soon. :D Have a great day!

$300 for a 6 month premium is a great deal, but I understand your situation. You can try to lower the price but adjusting the premium amounts. Sometimes if you take a defensive drivers course, you can get a 5% discount. See if they have any other discounts like good student or AAA. If that doesn't help to trim the fat, maybe you can do chores and errands for your parents for payment. Maybe even try some surveys that pay cash. Try some of the money making ideas on my blog.
  • I definitely think that after coming all this way you should try to find a way to make it work. Maybe there is something you can do even if it's not a job you'd want? Work in a retail store? Even in McDonalds you should be able to make way more than $50 in a month, right? I think it's worth it to have your car and be able to drive places and enjoy yourself, especially after all you've been through! Don't take the easy way out, hun! I know you can make it work.
  • Finding a job would be ideal. But since my school is in a very small town there aren't very many jobs. There's only one McDonalds within a 40 mile radius and 0 retail stores.
  • I don't think you should sell your car. That would definitely be defeating the purpose. Perhaps there are some cheaper rates out there. Try that or either continue to use whatever means of transportation you've been utilizing until you're able to come up with the money. BTW...you are as cute as a button....very photogenic!!!
  • I would try to look into jobs anyway. It sounds nearly impossible but you may never know. It'd be a shame to sell your car.
  • Well, I am in a similar boat. I am totally broke. Jobs are hard to come by these days, too. I do random things online for money, though. None of which include taking of clothes, haha. If you want to hear more about it, let me know and I can tell you what I do and send you some links. It's somewhat time consuming and the pay is minimal, but sometimes every little bit helps.
  • Right now I'm up for anything even making some extra $ online. The links would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks! You can email me at intelligenceisacurse (at) gmail

if you look at it broken down, $50.00/mo. is CHEAP for car insurance. I don't know if you'll find it lower than that....so, getting rid of that particular car may be the way you have to go, if a job isn't in the cards right now. ugh! dilemma
  • I'd hate for you to have to sell your car, since you haven't really had a chance to enjoy it! I hope you can work something out :)
  • $300 twice a year is quite acceptable, if you're referring to ongoing insurance payments. That comes out to $50 a month, which is what I pay on a old car with minimal coverage. If the $300 for 6 months is on top of monthly insurance payments...not sure. I don't know why that would be the case. Feel free to fill me in if I'm confused.

I personally always buy older cars...never finance (unless it's a personal loan from a relative), and get the minimum required insurance coverage. I don't have the budget for anything else so I don't really have another choice...not that I would choose otherwise.
  • Yeah, I think I'm going to try to work it out and scrape together $300 somehow. Even if it means selling cupcakes and brownies lol.
