Looking through old family possesions we came across my late grandmother’s pay stub. “Wow! $400!” My dad said. “That must have been a good month!” Then we realized, it was a pay stub for the month of December. $400 was all she had earned for that entire year.
My dad grew up in abject poverty within the poorest state in America. He had a brother and two sisters who who were all raised by a single parent. When my dad was 10, my grandmother got sick and could no longer work regularly. Although there are many programs in America to help people in such situations because he lived in a racially divided state, getting help was hard. There were many days where he went to bed hungry.
To think my dad came from all that and to see how great we have it, is statistically impossible. I have traveled the world, I have achieved a college education, and I have never once gone to bed hungry.
I love you Dad for all the hard work and sacrifices you have made so me and my brother would not have to face a similar plight. Happy Father’s Day!

I will start working next week. Luckily for me, my job will be providing me housing so my usual hour-long commute will be cut to about 20 minutes. I also need to start studying math in my free time in order to be prepared for my math heavy graduate major (I only took 2 math courses during my undergraduate career and am very behind). Working and studying are just some of the things I am doing in preparation for some major changes in my life coming very soon: I will be starting a new school, I will be moving to a new state, and I will be living on my own (without a roommate, yay!). To say I am not a bit overwhelmed would be an understatement.
My last few days were spent apartment hunting and I finally found a place! I will be moving to said apartment on September 1st. Around that time I will also be purchasing furniture because as of now I own nothing of the sort. I’m excited! After purchasing of the furniture and a piano (because there is NO way I’d be able to live without a piano), I’ll probably spend the next few years saving money and avoiding debt. I want to live comfortably once I’m done with school.
I don’t want to change this blog over to a how to study, interior decorating, coupon clipping, or financial blog but I do want to document these processes as I go through some of these things over the next few months. Hope I don’t bore any readers that I do have left with my hodgepodge of posts. And hopefully I’ll be able to maintain my blog a little better than I have been doing in the past.
