I Hate Snow…

Unless it cancels school, I hate snow. Shoveling 24 inches of snow a few weeks ago wasn’t fun, and I’m almost certain it’s not going to be fun this time around either. Unfortunately, even after 14 inches last weekend, my school was still in session. And I was beyond pissed. You know why? Because my school happened to be the ONLY school within a fifty mile radius that was still in session. Yup, all the other elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, AND COLLEGES were closed but mine.

Belize was a nice reprieve from the horrible winter weather (and to me all winter weather is horrible, I’m just saying). But right before I left for Belize I got to experience Snowpocalypse 1. And and just now I’m in the middle of snowpocalypse 2. When will this torture end???

As I stated before in between the two blizzards there was a 14 inch snow storm last weekend. And even though I went outside and enjoyed myself (or rather watched other people enjoy themselves while I complained from a safe distance)…

…I refuse to have frostbitten toes again. I refuse to go on a 2 mile hike for food, I now have enough food to last me throughout the weekend, and most importantly, I am NOT going outside.

As I was leaving for Belize a too familiar thing happened. The airport staff thought I was an 11 year old unaccompanied. minor and I almost couldn’t board my plane. Uggghh. My birth year on my passport is a little hard to read since it is right over a watermark, so it took some convincing. I finally found the best argument, you know…would an 11 year old really have boobs this big?? Thank you.

There are a three things I love about Belize:

They have a bootleg channel!
There drinking age is 18 and it’s not enforced so I’ve never been carded. (Do you know how much this boosts my ego?)
The culture

Yesterday we went to a small town called Dangriga. The ancestors of this town were escaped African slaves from a nearby Caribbean island.

The culture is vibrant there

And you know what? I’m kind of jealous. You see my family doesn’t really have a distinct “culture”. Neither of my parents know the history of their ancestors or where they originated from. They can only backtrack two generations. And that is sad. It is amazing to see people here in Belize embrace their culture. They don’t want it to be forgotten or fade away. And they are proud.

I guess that’s what amazes me about other countries I’ve lived in or visited -Japan, Korea, China, Scotland – the desire for culture to remain an intricate part of one’s upbringing. In America that is not quite the case, especially within the African American community. Everyone in Belize is so close; brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, all together. And even though the country is so poor, so underdeveloped, they are so much more closely knit.

Remember I said I am here to work not play, so I haven’t been to any touristy places yet. Being in a developing country is truly eye opening and I believe that every citizen in a developed country should experience what it’s like to be in a developing country. When countries like the US go into a recession it is not necessarily ideal. But it really is nothing compared to what developing countries go through. I see all these signs about human trafficking…and it just stops me dead in my tracks and makes me think.

I take so many things for granted back in the US. Still it looks like everyone is enjoying themselves.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post. It was really uplifting!! I’m still feeling pretty shitty but hopefully this time around something will be found. I haven’t had much time to reply to comments but I’ll hopefully get a chance to do that tomorrow.

For the past few days my area has been dealing with the effects of a blizzard. There was about 2 feet of snow in my back yard with 4-5ft (1.5 meters) drifts.

I took a few photos and this is my ultimate favorite. It was taken during the middle of the storm. Nope this isn’t anyone in my immediate family! But our wonderful neighbors. How many people have neighbor’s who are willing to plow both their and your driveway during the middle of a storm?

Of course there was a little left for us to shovel, but it was considerably easier since the first 2-3ft (meter or so for those on the metric system) were already gone. Here’s my dad shoveling the remainder the next day. Also you can see my poor baby (car) in the background covered in a mound of ice/snow. So sad, so sad.
